Working with parents
There are almost as many styles of parenting as there are parents, and so many ways of getting advice, from books, family, friends or the media, but working form a 'needs based' approach we are able to help parents be the best parents they can be for their children. Often parents are surprised that what has worked for their first and sometimes second third and fourth does not work with the next child!
Sometimes parents come to us because their child is having difficulties at school, with learning or behaviour; sometimes parents come to us because there has been a break up in the family or they are having difficulties as their child is suffering from a physical or emotional health problem. We work as quickly as we can to use what 'works' in a family to help to fix what doesn't work.
We work with one parent or two, and sometimes with the whole family.
We sometimes see people just once or twice and sometimes we see people weekly for a while.
We continue to develop our service and hope soon to be able to offer a parenting programme in Wiltshire and an on-line or 'Skype' service. Please contact us to find out how we might help you.
Working with Children
We help children with phobias, anxiety, anger, trauma and confidence building, as with adults we keep the number of sessions to the minimum.
For instance a 5 year old who had a phobia of flies was preventing the family enjoying a camping holiday, after one session she had overcome the problem and within an hour blew a fly off the front of her dress.
On another occasion a 10 year old was having nightmares remembering a trauma that had happened aged 3. After a single session her Mum reported that she had her daughter back, she was playing with her little sister and enjoying being with her Mum again.
A third child aged 12 had lost his confidence with his sport and was becoming nervous and anxious at home and school. After 2 sessions he had regained his confidence as was enjoying life again.
We do not have rules about how many sessions are needed or whether parents should or should not be with the child during therapy sessions; the important thing for therapy to work is that the child feels safe and calm.
