Post natal depression can happen to any mother. Having a young baby to look after
can be very stressful. It can be difficult to get enough sleep and changes in lifestyle
and responsibility can result in feeling like your whole life is out of control.
The human givens approach makes sense of the links between post natal depression and other forms of depression.
At the heart of both is anxiety or stress as a direct result of having basic innate human needs unmet by your current situation. A new baby has its own needs and it can be hard to get your own needs met. For instance how can you possibly get your innate need for community met when you have no free time? How can you have any control, privacy or fun when a baby is screaming at you every hour of the day? The lack of sleep experienced by mums can cause a breakdown of the REM state (which is associated with the dream state) and lead to depression
New understandings about what causes depression have led to really effective and reliable methods to provide help to sufferers. Please read our general depression page for further details. Our approach is so successful that Wiltshire Human Givens have secured an ongoing contract to provide support to Wiltshire Maternity Services. We train midwives in approaches to mental health and we get referrals via the NHS to help young mums overcome post natal depression.
