Washing handsObsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can take many forms but all of them involve repetitive behaviours or rituals which are done in an attempt to relieve a perceived threat or source of anxiety.

Typical behaviours include constant checking (of doors, locks etc) repetitive hand washing, obsessive cleaning, ordering or arranging. Alternatively, you may not have any behavioural symptoms, but may suffer from constant repetitive thoughts.

Sufferers often go to some lengths to hide their habits from people around them and these problems are more widespread than many realise. If you are suffering from a habit which at some level you “know” doesn’t really make sense - and yet feel unable to stop it or moderate it, then you are not alone.

We use a variety of techniques to help people overcome their obsessions and compulsions. We talk to you and ask you about your habits, when they started, what makes things better, what situations make things worse. We offer explanations of how the brain works, techniques to cut down on repetitive or destructive behaviour. We use guided imagery and teach relaxation skills in order to reduce anxiety levels. We also use metaphor and story because we recognise that the brain works by pattern matching.

Of course we can never guarantee a 100% success rate but we do get successful outcomes. Habits which have been practiced over many years can take quite a lot of effort to “unlearn”. We will always give you an honest assessment of your situation. Check out our testimonials to read how others have been helped by our approach and call us for a chat about how we can help you.
