Smoking skullWe can help you no matter what form your addiction takes provided that you sincerely want to stop. We deal with all sorts of addictions such as alcohol, drugs like cannabis, heroin, crack cocaine, gambling, sexual obsessions, computer games, shopping, food and eating disorders.

There are new understandings about the mechanisms in the brain which make human beings susceptible to addictions. Put simply, addiction can be considered as a malfunctioning of the basic “carrot and stick” (or reward and tolerance) system of the brain. It is the very same system which is involved with our desire to seek new experiences and to learn. When it goes wrong it can cause huge misery and suffering, not only for the person who is addicted, but for their friends and family.

This new way of looking at the addictive process makes it clear that anything which has the capacity to give us pleasure, also has the potential to become the subject of an addiction. This goes some way to explaining how it can be that people can get addicted to forms of behaviour as well as substances. It has much more to do with the way the brain works than any intrinsic physical properties of the substance itself.

We start by acknowledging that no matter how destructive your habit may be - you keep doing it because it actually helps you in some way. We help you to develop alternative coping mechanisms because we know that you are not likely to stop your addictive behaviour until you have alternative ways of coping with the things which are bothering you - whether it is anxiety, trauma, sadness or a feeling of being overwhelmed by life.

The human givens approach is effective in helping people to overcome addictions. We can explain to you what is going on and why it can seem so impossible to quit. We use guided imagery and relaxation techniques to help you form new perspectives on your life. We also focus on helping you to identify your innate human needs and help you to find new ways to get these needs met.
